Classification of Temperature Sensors According to Contact Mode

The temperature transducer, as an important category of sensors, is a semiconductor device that uses the characteristics of NTC's resistance to change with temperature to convert non-electrical physical quantities into electrical quantities, so that temperature can be accurately measured and automatically controlled.


1. The purpose of temperature transducer


The temperature transducer measures indirectly through the change of certain characteristics of the object with the temperature. The characteristics of many materials and components change with temperature, so there are quite a few materials that can be used as temperature transducers. temperature transducers change physical parameters with temperature: expansion, resistance, capacitance, electromotive force, magnetic properties, frequency, optical characteristics, thermal noise, and so on.


The temperature transducer has a wide range of uses. It can be used for temperature measurement and control, temperature compensation, flow rate, flow and wind speed measurement, liquid level indication, temperature measurement, ultraviolet and infrared light measurement, microwave power measurement, etc., so it is widely used in fields of color TVs, color displays of computer, switching power supplies, water heaters, refrigerators, kitchen equipment, air conditioners, automobiles. In recent years, the rapid growth of the automotive electronics and consumer electronics industries has driven the rapid growth of the demand for temperature transducers.


2. Classification of temperature transducers according to contact methods


The contact mode of the temperature transducer and the measured medium is divided into two categories: contact type and non-contact type. The contact temperature transducer needs to maintain thermal contact with the measured medium, so that the two can perform sufficient heat exchange to reach the same temperature. This type of sensor mainly includes resistance type, thermocouple, PN junction temperature transducer and so on. The non-contact temperature transducer does not need to be in contact with the measured medium, but is transmitted to the temperature transducer through the heat radiation or convection of the measured medium to achieve the purpose of temperature measurement. This type of sensor mainly includes infrared temperature transducer. The main feature of this temperature measurement method is that it can measure the temperature of substances in motion (such as the bearing temperature of a slow-moving train, the temperature of a rotating cement kiln) and objects with a small heat capacity (such as the temperature distribution in an integrated circuit).
